Agency

The Empowerer

Who can own this — and how much room do they have?

Empowerer leadership creates room for people to act.

What this archetype contributes

Empowerer leadership creates room for people to act.

It distributes ownership, places decisions closer to the work and signals trust through meaningful responsibility rather than permission alone.

It is especially valuable when responsibility has concentrated upward or capable people are waiting for decisions they could make themselves.

What it makes available
Agency · trust · ownership · distributed responsibility
When relied on too heavily
Autonomy can become distance when support or alignment is still needed.

How it relates to the other five functions

Agency multiplies what a leadership team can carry, but it relies on direction to stay coherent, development to be ready, and structure to be supported. Where agency is broad and those functions are thin, ownership can drift apart.

Research foundations

Distributed-leadership and autonomy research associates decision rights held close to the work with faster, better-informed judgement. The public framing is functional: whether agency is available, not who is naturally trusting.

An archetype is a behavioural centre of gravity, not a behavioural boundary.
